Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Finally Topshop is coming to the states. In Fall 2008, all that cute UK clothes readily available to us Americans. Actually, it’s only readily available for New Yorkers. Topshop will open their flagship store in SOHO, New York. No one can argue that Topshop has some seriously cute UK sty-lo. I especially love their jackets! Military, princess sleeves, trench, so many styles so little money. Don’t get me started on how much I adore UK fashion.

And as an added bonus, Kate Moss has launched her own line and decided to bless us with a free Starlight charity shirt. It’s FREE for the first couple of US customers (while supplies last). Unfortunately I’m not in the area, but New York fashionistas please help yourself.

Social Network for Music - imeem

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

In my constant search for new apps and sites, I stumbled upon imeem.  Imeem is a social network centered on providing music for online listeners. I would say it’s extremely geared towards community building.

Imeem Dashboard

add MissChicGeek as a friend!

Imeem has some pretty cool features such as:

  • customizable dashboard fully equipped with web2.0 drag and drop widgets
  • extremely user friendly personalizable user profile page
  • ability to add and remove dashboard widgets
  • media tracker
  • ability to add song and music player on to any site
  • and basic SN features such as message board, friend tracker, friend finder, and customizable user profiles

Couple of features I believe would really up their game:

  • user profile urls to include profiler full name (everyone loves a personalized link!)
  • ability to add nicknames
  • ability to post a status update
  • eventually have the ability to sync up with my ping.fm account. I’m all about centralized messaging.

Imeem seems like a hybrid of facebook/myspace/lastfm. I love the ability to create personalized profiles, accounts and super easy to use profile customizability. I’m also definitely a big fan of the media tracking and “play related” function. The music selection is questionable (I’ll give it a couple of days). I see a bright future for imeem, I just hope it doesnt run into the same issues as Pandora and Lastfm.

Polyvore - Mix and Match items from anywhere to create your own online wardrobe

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Lets face it, unless one knows exactly what one is shopping for online, one can get lost wasting hours of their life searching aimlessly. One of the reasons why we all love Google is because Google helps up filter through the online mess and narrows into exactly what we’re looking for. Well that’s what Polyvore does but for clothing. Polyvore is an online website that allows users to create a wardrobe of online outfits. All you have to do is sign up (free membership of course), and start piecing your killer outfit together. Polyvore allows users to create, modify, and save their masterpiece to each user’s account. But what makes Polyvore different for all those other shopping search engines is that Polyvore advocates users to publish their collage or “set” and other members of the community has to ability to view and comment.

Just a little something I put together-

Polyvore-MissChicGeek's Set

What I love:

  • from high end to low end, polyvore has an awesome selection of brands and shops
  • has the ability to search by brand or by product type
  • great place to browse for new products you wouldn’t have found if you stuck to a single brand’s website.
  • i love the ability to create my own outfit and publish it to the community.

What I could live without:

  • after selecting an item from the product tray, there isn’t a “close box” option in the popup.
  • has the tendency to show duplicate items even from the same store, i like my search results to be clean.
  • there is something off with the site’s cache. I was playing with my canvas and i navigated to the blog section, navigated back and for some reason it has my old, old set. Good thing I’m big on saving.
  • can’t move the divs. it completely annoys me when I can’t move divs. What if I want to have a better look at what’s in the background?

Honestly aside from a couple of functionality issues, Polyvore is a great site to browse and create some fabulous outfits. Whether you’re browsing or purchasing, Polyvore is a great resource to piece together the perfect outfit. And don’t worry guys, Polyvore has mens clothing as well.

So sad the weekend is over and it’s another grueling day Monday. But on the bright side, it seems that MAC has been super generous with their promotions lately. We lucky for them, we’re more than happy to accept. MAC’s latest promotion, FREE SHIPPING on any purchase (normally MAC’s minimum for free shipping is $60). If there has been that one lip gloss you’ve been eyeing or your favorite shadow just ran out, this is the time to re-stalk. What can be better than having MAC deliver straight to your door?

Last.fm in beta version!

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

I think it’s pretty obvious that I’m a HUGE fan of Last.fm. I’m all about the next big underground application. Some even love/hate me because I get them addicted to my addictions. But hey, sharing is caring.

Now I’m pretty sure they are releasing beta version in waves like when Google first released their gmail “beta” version. Maybe I was lucky enough to get an invite because I scrobble 24/7 or maybe they just randomly pulled my account out of a hat. Either way, I got an invite.

Pros:

  • dashboard is A LOT cleaner.
  • “play my radio” function is pretty sweet. it’s conveniently placed in the upper right sidebar position. I love listening to my friend’s top tracks.
  • footer of the page has less banner advertisements (probably because it’s in beta phase but still a perk!)
  • recent activity feed, maybe it’s the stalker in me.

Cons:

  • not all the functionalities are active.
  • feels a bit empty on the left sidebar. considering how long the pages can get it seems to be missing something? It looks as if they shoved all the widgets and content in the middle and right side of the page and left the left side empty.
  • I actually like the header navigation bar of the current page better than the beta page.

hopefully you can get your hands on the beta version soon and judge for yourself. Or if even, shoot an email over an maybe they’ll give you beta access? Just tell them Hey1tsjenny sent you <wink>

but since I’m a giver, here is a snapshot

Yelp - User Reviews and Recommendations of Top Restaurants, Shopping, Nightlife, Entertainment, Services and More at Yelp.

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

It was nearly a year ago when I was first introduced to this interesting little site. I don’t remember how or who introduced me but since then, Yelp has been on my top 10 favorite sites. Yelp is like my secret weapon. Where to eat? well just plug in a city, genre, and boom! You get recommendations from your 10,000 closest friends. Not only does Yelp recommend restaurants but also salons, massage parlors, and even dentists! (If you couldn’t tell by now, I’m big on community generated sites) In its most simplified form, Yelp is a community oriented network of people like you and myself who love to brag about the next best thing. Ever go to a new restaurant and not know what to order? Now you can look up what others have had and know what dishes to stay away from. Members have the ability to post pictures of food, personal lists of places to eat, and even community events. Yelp caters to neighborhood oriented recommendations.

Yelp

You don’t need to be a member to reap the benefits. Personally, I was stalking Yelp for half a year before I took the plunge of joining. I must say, the people there are genuinely nice. And not in a creepy lets meet up and let me show you my blog, but in a warm and supportive way.

Yelp has introduced me to a variety of new restaurant that has tickled my pallet. From neighborhood hole in the walls to bousie Japanese french fusion restaurants. I’m especially thankful for Yelp’s recommendations of desert joints. Yelp is definitely one of the many dotcoms to keep an eye on.

If you’re on Yelp, be sure to say hi Yelp Me

deviantART - where ART meets application!

Monday, June 9th, 2008

I’ll let you in on a little secret, I’ve been a loyal fan of deviantART for over 8 years. Given my fickle nature, this is no easy fiat. DeviantArt is a place where I go to escape the world of the norm, where mainstream is despised and individuality is adored. I’ve always been intrigued by the art displayed on deviantART. There is something alluring about art that’s derived from passion, not for commerce. From anime to traditional photography, deviantART provides a plethora of categories in which artists can display their creativity.

When ever I’m in need of inspiration or feel smothered by the cookie-cutter styles of mainstream culture, I can always turn to deviantART to deliver me a breath of fresh air.

Take a peak, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. Just in case you need a guiding hand, here is my favorite starting point: categories>photography>all>popular>all time
